Once again we made it out to the South Jersey shore for a visit with the Field Clan. Thanks to Maxine and Howard, we stayed in a nice house two blocks from the beach. It was hard to believe that Howard was no longer with us, but I felt he was there in spirit. We had nice weather, got lots of swimming in and ate lots of ice cream. Golf, tennis, minigolf, reading, walking on the beach, flying kites and puzzling kept us busy.

August 15th 2015 Chardon Ohio

Hard to believe the summer is almost gone. The rehab of my hips is going according to schedule. I should be back in full force by November. Anna is busy preparing for Grinnell, and will head out next week. Emily will drive Anna and her supplies out on Thursday, I'll fly out Friday and drive back with Emily on the weekend with a box of kleenex. Jay will fly out for his Senior year at Champlain the following week and then it going to, suddenly, be very quite around here. We made our annual pilgramage back east a week ago. We got to Chardon to celebrate Sarah's 80th birthday. We got out on Lake Erie for some fun with Patrick. Then we drove further east to visit with Emily's family on the south Jersey Shore. After our beach trip, we returned to Philadelphia for a tree dedication at the Morris Arboretum for Howard Field. I did not take any pictures at that event. I have posted two pages of pictures. So follow the link at the bottom of this pages to see the Jersy pictures.

To say that this year has been busy for us is quite an understatement. Two years ago I started to have chronic pain in my hips. Physical therapy helped but I found myself limiting my activities more and more. After realizing that I could no longer take a walk on the beach with the Field clan or a hike in the Metro Parks with the Warm clan, I decided to throw in the towel and in January I had my right hip operated on for femoral acetabular impingement. The surgeon reshaped the femoral head and reconstructed my labrum (tissue lining the inside of the hip socket). The operation required four weeks on crutches and six months of rehab. Then I went back a week and a half ago to have my other hip repaired. And if you are doing the math, yes that is less than six months. Both operations went well and I am trying to be a patient patient during the healing and rehab phases. Emily has been fantastic helping me through these surgeries, as have been Jeremiah and Anna.

Meanwhile, during the drama around my surgeries, Anna was college searching. Emily took her out to Ohio for a long weekend to see Kenyon, Wooster and Case Western. Then Anna flew out on her own to Saint Paul to see Macalester. I squeeze in a trip with her to LA for a visit to Occidental and then Emily flew out with her to see Grinnell in Iowa. All of the schools were great and it was a tough decision for Anna. It came down to the wire, and she chose Grinnell. Emily and I think it will be a great fit for her both academically and socially. She will be out there in time for the Iowa Caucuses.

Jay spent the winter studying in Montreal. Despite the cold winds he had a wonderful experience and many fond memories. He is home for the summer and working at a local sandwich shop. He will return for his senior year at Champlain where he will develop his final video game project. In fact, his team is already hard at work.

And, during this time Emily and I managed to strip out some stained and worn out carpet and nail in a hardwood floor as a DIY project in a bedroom. I also was able to complete a dining room table using local beetle killed wood which I had been working on and off (mostly off) for the past two years.

Then one week after my second surgery, Anna graduated from Fairview High School!! We went to the school awards ceremony, the technical theater banquet where Anna won Senior Techie of the Year, of course the graduation ceremony and then a party at our house. It was all very exciting and fun, but somewhat bitter sweet for Emily and I. In a few months Emily and I will be without our children for the first time in 21 years.

Winter has arrived here in Boulder and the mountains are starting to fill up with snow. We had a busy fall. Anna made several college visit tours. She spent alot of time on applications. She got to be the Stage Director for the One Acts, a series of student directed one act plays. The show ran for four days.

Emily and I brought our bicycles out to Healdsburg CA for some riding in wine county. We had a wonderful week riding, eating great food and of course tasting the local wines. I did discover that doing a wine tasting 5 miles into a 35 mile ride was not the best idea.

My mom fly out from Cleveland for Thanksgiving. We made it to the Boulder Dinner Theater Stage for Fiddler on the Roof. It was a well done show. We had a delicious Thanksgiving day dinner.

Jay has been hard at work up at Champlain College. He was able to get down to Boston with his roomate for Thanksgiving at Dan and Colleens. He will be home for Winter Break in only a few more weeks. And then its up to Montreal for the second semester of his Junior year.

Last Saturday, it was suppose to be in the 50s in the moring before a front blew in and the temperature dropped. Emily and I planned a mountain bike ride. Unfortunately, the front blew in early and we rode in 28 degree weather. Oh yeah, we also got a 50cc scooter to get around town when the weather is good. And for some reason, my phone's camera got set on a filter that yellowed my pictures, so sorry for the odd tint on some of them and thank you Anna for discovering the filter.

We have been having a nice summer out here in Boulder. Lots of spring rain put our garden in good shape. We built four raised beds for vegetables and we have kale, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, lettuce, and basil growing where our trampoline use to be. We have made our first batch of pesto and got some frozen for the winter. Our cherry tree went crazy and we got buckets full of sour cherries. Jay made a delicious cherry pie from scratch.

Anna and Jay are home again. Anna finished up her job as a camp counselor. Jay continues to work at the local sandwich shop. Look for his iPhone game in the app store at the end of summer.

Emily and I rode the Triple Bypass Ride in July. 120 miles and over 10,000 feet of climbing over three passes. We had a great ride and good weather. Although we were chased by a storm up Loveland pass. We were plenty tired at the end of the 10 hour ride and spent the night celebrating, by sleeping at Beaver creek where the finish line was.

Sarah made the trip out to Boulder for July fourth. We went up to our cabin for the holiday. Last year we went into town for the fireworks and got stuck in a massive traffic jam when they closed down the highway out of town because of an accident. Mom and I were stuck in the car until 3:00 in the morning. So this time we stayed at the cabin and watched the fire works from the porch.

We went out east to visit the families. Maxine and Howard rented a spectacular beach house in Cape May. Lots of swimming, bird watching and eating. A wonderful week with nice weather. We then went out to Chardon Ohio for a visit with the Warm family. We got to eat a couple nice dinners with everyone and got out on Patrick's boat for a spin around lake Erie.

Well, summer has come to Boulder Colorado. Jeremiah is back from Burlington after a very successful Sophomore year at Champlain. He has taken a job at a local sandwich shop called Snarfs, a few blocks from our house. In his spare time he is working on an iPhone game in the puzzle genre. He is doing some running and of course gaming, which I suppose could be considered professional research at this point. He and I have been to two Rapids soccer games so far.

Anna finished up a challenging Junior year at High School. She spent part of the spring looking at potential colleges and being heavily involved in stage crew. She has taken a summer job at a camp she attended, the JCC ranch camp. She took off last week for a counselor training session and we miss her already.

Emily is busy with work and the farm CSA she helps run. She got a new bicycle and is training for the Triple Bypass Ride, held in early July. The Triple Bypass goes from Evergreen Co in the foothills to Avon Colorado just west of Vail. It is about 115 miles long and goes over three major mountain passes. So she has been getting lots of riding in.

I am trying to get the Super Randaneer Award this summer. It involves riding a 200K, 300K, 400K and 600K rides all in one year. I have tried twice in the past to get the award and failed. I have ridden the 200K, 300K, and 400K so far and I am scheduled to ride he 600K in two weeks, so it all goes well, I'll get it done. Then I'll ride the Triple Bypass with Emily.

Columbine Lake

Winter is well under way here in Colorado. It looks like most of you have been hit pretty hard this year. We have had the most snow in the mountains that we have had in years, which makes for a great ski season. It also makes for some shoveling on the roof of our cabin.

Jeremiah is in the thick of his sophomore year of college at Champlain. This semester he gets a real feel for video game design in his Production Class. We celebrated his birthday when he came to visit during Thanksgiving. He is no longer a teenager.

Anna is an assistant stage manager for the spring play, so her responsibilities have increased in the theater department. The performances are at the end of this week, so she is really busy. She is already in the planning phase for the student only musical later this year, where she will be doing the lights and sound.

Sarah came out for a visit during the fall. She got to see the high school musical, Music Man and we drove up into Rocky Mountain NP. It was really cold up there and we had to eat our picnic in the car.

Emily and I finished our marathon kitchen remodel and are very pleased with the results. We are still waiting for a couple of chairs for a small sitting area, which should be in next week. We are getting as much skiing in as possible. In my spare time I am in the process of building a dinning table out of beetle kill pine and baking bread.

2013 Travels to the East

Our annual trip east , first stop was Cleveland where we met my Mom and Lisa’s family at Kelli’s Island where they had a house. We took the ferry over. We had a great time at the beach and eating a sea food dinner. We drove back through Cleveland and went out on the lake with Laura and her family for a picnic and tubing

Emily and I took our first vacation without children this year and packed up our bikes and flew to San Francisco. We spent five days bicycle touring up the Sonoma valley, down the Russian River and down the coast. We went from B&B to B&B tasting the local wines on the way.
